When the Days Are Dark: Calling on God in Hard Times”
“Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know.” — Jeremiah 33:3
Not long ago, someone wrote and asked me a simple but deeply human question:
“Roy, I’ve been having some really bad days. What do you do when you’re going through hard times?”
My friend, that question has been asked for generations. I’ve asked it myself. In my own life, in my own ministry, I’ve faced moments when the weight of this world felt too heavy to carry. Perhaps you’ve felt that way, too—when pain seems endless, prayers feel unanswered, and you wonder if God even hears you.
I want to tell you something personal. One afternoon, years ago, I reached a breaking point. In desperation, I cried out to God:
“Take me home. I want to go home. This place hurts. I want more love or nothing at all!”
I was tired. I was worn. I thought I had to fix everything myself. But in that moment—at my lowest—God showed up.
He didn’t condemn me. He didn’t turn away. He reminded me of something: “Whether you like it or not, you have a calling to fulfill. I’ve been with you all along.”
Friend, that moment changed my life. It didn’t erase my struggles overnight. But it anchored me in something far greater than myself: the unshakable love of God.
What to Do When You’re in the Dark
If you’re in that place right now, here’s what I want you to know—and what I did myself:
- Call on God out loud.
Say it. Don’t hold back. Pray honestly. Tell Him what hurts. Say, “Lord, I need more of Your love—or nothing at all.” God honors sincerity. - Repent and realign.
When you speak to God, be willing to let the Holy Spirit examine your heart. If there are sins to confess, confess them. If there’s bitterness to release, release it. He already knows everything you’ve ever done and why you did it. - Be patient—but expect Him to act.
Sometimes God’s presence floods in right away. Other times, He walks with us through what saints have called the “dark night of the soul.” It’s not punishment. It’s preparation. On the other side of it is a faith deeper than you’ve ever known. - Know you don’t have to go to church to talk to Him.
Church is a gift, but it’s not a prerequisite to approach the Father. Anyone, anywhere, can speak to Him. He hears you. He’s near you. And He will place the right people, the right opportunities, and the right answers in your path if you are honest with Him.
A Final Word
I used to think I had control—that I could solve everything on my own. But when I “snapped” and called on God, He reminded me: He had been with me the whole time, helping me, guiding me, loving me.
If you’re reading this and you’re hurting, let me tell you plainly:
Cry out to Him. Be honest. Ask for His love. Repent where you need to. Trust Him even in the dark.
Because even when you can’t see Him, He’s still there.
Even when you can’t feel Him, He’s still working.
And even when you think you’re alone, you’re not.
God’s promise still stands:
“Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.” — Hebrews 13:5
Hold on to that.
He’s holding on to you.
